Simone Rocha at Topshop








This week saw Irish designer Simone Rocha take on her first solo show at London Fashion Week, firmly cementing her status as the new one to watch on the fashion scene – and it’s not just her identifiable surname which is earning her some serious cool points.

Tapping into this season’s unceasing androgony trend, the 25 year old daughter of fashion legend John Rocha has been whipping up a storm with her AW’11 Topshop collection, which sees her adding touches of femininity to classic tailored staples to create novel yet wearable designs.

The collection features six beautifully tailored pieces and androgynous silhouettes with her signature feminine twist. On offer are chic, crisp white poplin shirts with gossamer thin, neon sleeves and classic black blazers with contrasting cable knit detail.

Simone Rocha at Topshop successfully ticks the box for the androgynous, heritage and colour blocking trends all in one collection – her fingers couldn’t be more on the fashion pulse if they tried.

Nailing It











2013 has undoubtedly been the ‘year of the nails’.

Nail art has exploded onto the fashion scene, with a model’s manicured hand becoming equally as essential as a pair of heels. On the high street, companies such as Minx and WAH nails setting up shop in British nail bars have led to creative nail art being accessible to everyone. And amongst all of this nail hysteria, nail transfers have emerged as the latest nail thrill for everyday glamour pusses.

My favourite transfers come from DIY nail art experts Nail Rock, who have perfected the at home nail wrap and offer a whole host of quirky designs, including ‘Furry Cheetah’, ‘Studded Cover’, Swarovski crystals and their newly released ‘Jeans for Genes’ denim-inspired designs. Created by nail expert Zoe Pocock, the wraps simply need to be filed down to size and blasted with a hot hair drier to secure.

Ever since my first gel manicure which provoked a barrage of compliments from strangers and left my colour magically unaffected by scuffing/chipping/nail varnish remover, I have waved goodbye to conventional nail polish and climbed fully aboard the nail art bandwagon. So thank you Nail Rock– getting wild with the Furry Cheetah is first on my list!

Kobi Levi









Stepping into Kobi Levi’s shoe studio must be like entering a sort of magical footwear playground, where feet are invited to dip themselves into tongue-poking booties or get fruity with a pair of banana slip-ons… wild.

Eccentric Israeli shoe designer Kobi Levi‘s school of thought is hey, shoes aren’t just made for walking, they’re made for staring at. And if you took a stroll down the street in a pair of these, you would attract some serious attention.

Levi marries footwear with sculpture and the result is these crazy badboys. All of the pieces are handmade in his studio, where he works in the hope of creating shoes which are ‘alive’, with or without the foot.

“The shoe is my canvas. the trigger to create a new piece comes when an idea, a concept and/or an image comes to mind. the combination of the image and footwear creates a new hybrid and the design/concept comes to life. The piece is a wearable sculpture.”

Pure genius.

Madewell: Holiday Video 2012











If planning your party outfits this season is taking up far too much headspace and sending you into a decision making meltdown, take some time out with Madewell’s ‘Choose Your Own Adventure’ video and plan someone else’s instead!

The interactive fashion adventure film lets you play stylist by helping model Dree Hemingway and stylist Marina Muñoz decide on dress code, accessories and party decorations – geek chic or glam adventurer? Sparkle or confetti? With 5 seconds to make each choice, time is short but fashion fun is endless.

“What makes the video so amazing is that you control it,” says Madewell’s head of design, Kin Ying Lee. “You choose every direction the video takes — from what pieces she wears to which party she goes to — the options are endless. It’s completely addictive.”

Showcasing dazzling gold sequin skirts, furry trapper hats and cropped boyfriend blazers, be warned: the more versions you watch, the more Madewell you’ll want to buy.

Tommy Knows How To Party

Nothing gets you in the mood for Christmas quite like a gaggle of half dressed, tartan-clad beauties partying in their Hilfiger pjs.

And this is exactly what Tommy Hilfiger is offering in an effort to spread some preppy Christmas cheer this December. Staged in the Hilfiger family mansion and styled by Karl Templer, the ‘Holiday Par-tay’ campaign celebrates the American sportswear brand’s Preppy Holidays collection, and subsequently makes everyone else’s Christmas work parties appear hugely sensible and uncool.

Givenchy Spring 2012












Givenchy’s new ‘Black Surfers’ Spring 2012 ad campaign presents a deliciously dark and brooding start to the year. Italian designer Riccardo Tisci envokes a stormy atmosphere with the season-appropriate beach setting juxtaposed against darkening skies and gothic black surfboards, in order to convey the typically romantic theme behind the collection: ‘the expression of a love story between a surfer and a mermaid.’

Largely inspired by underwater elements, the Givenchy Spring 2012 collection offers opulent shell-pink tailoring in the shape of form-fitting silhouettes, with curved lapels, low-slung shapes and surprise touches of eel skin, as well as an abundance of sea-foam ruffles, chiffon sequins and luxe metallics. In menswear, olive green military-inspired outerwear is offset by the continued repetition of Tisci’s strikingly exotic Birds of Paradise print (undoubtedly one of my favourite prints of the season) which will be exploding onto t-shirts, jackets and accessories this spring.

Glove Is In The Air

Glove weather is officially upon us.  
Kurt Geiger has done a superb job of sexing up the ever-cozy traditional mitten with their new 
KG Isla gloves – a stylish and sophisticated pair of mittens featuring sleek black leather, snuggly knit cuff and gold hardware, and providing firm proof that maximum hand warmth need not be sacrificed in the face of fashion.
In a delicate balance of form and function, the KG Isla mittens are not only a treat on the eyes but also have the additional benefit of practicality. Karl Lagerfeld launches ‘Karl’

















Want to know the next vital date for your style diary? Mouses at the ready, because January 25th 2012 will mark the day when monochrome-loving Chanel director Karl Lagerfeld will be launching his new affordable ‘Karl’ line exclusively at Net-a-Porter.

The 100 piece rock-and-roll themed collection will include everyone’s favourite Lagerfeld staples: leather skirts, bib-front shirts, detachable collars, luxe sportswear and plenty of black black black, but the difference will be in the affordability, with price points starting as low as £50.

Natalie Massenet, founder of Net-A-Porter, says of the new line: ‘The collection will speak to every woman who wants a bit of the inimitable fabulous street chic that Karl Lagerfeld is known for.’ The luxury online retailer will carry the label exclusively for the first four weeks following the launch, after which they will continue to be the only online seller of the collection.

Carven Resort 2012 Collection
















Oh Carven, what you do to me! The new Carven Resort 2012 collection has truly swept me off me feet with its abundance of bowed shoes, neat collars and beautiful geographical and Heidi-esque prints.

Inspired by the Alpine landscapes of Bavaria and Switzerland, designer Guillaume Henry said the collection was about embodying “crispness quality of all the things coming from those mountains”. Henry’s recent revival of the long standing fashion label has seen him bringing to the fore the traditional Carven hallmarks of tiny shoulders, prim pinafores and abbreviated ballerina skirts with an additional element of cool, offbeat playfulness. And this collection certainly follows suit.

Fresh, light and all things nice – the Carven Resort 2012 collection is picture postcard perfect.

Asos Urban Tour









The ASOS Urban Tour AW’11 is making menswear look seriously good.

Check the clip below for some superbly street interactive marketing from online fashion retailer ASOS, which fuses video editorial with online shopping. The ASOS Urban Tour is an epic dance-themed video campaign featuring a series of short films showcasing the best creative urban talent from seven major cities around the world while promoting the ASOS AW’11 menswear collection. Below is London’s offering.

The videos star the most talented street performers from each city (clad head to toe in ASOS gear, obviously) exercising their extraordinary skills to a soundtrack of gritty dubstep beats, with viewers able to follow links to explore each artist’s look.

Presenting the best-dressed beatboxers in Tokyo, skaters in Paris and breakdancers in London, the ASOS Urban Tour offers an innovative twist on the online catwalk and represents a step forward in the way that we browse clothes online.

Felder Felder SS’12











Give me some of that!

One of the absolute highlights of London Fashion Week for me was Felder Felder’s SS’12 runway show. Known for their modern, sexy and extremely wearable designs, the German sister act celebrate the glamorous, charismatic woman with a definite wild side. They had already won me over massively with their dangerously cool leather and feather creations as seen in their AW’11 collection, and this week, they’ve done it again. And with a LFW runway show entitled “BANG!”, I knew to expect big things…

They certainly didn’t disappoint. Strutting down the Felder Felder catwalk this week was plenty of signature body con, sheer paneling, studs and of course, the timeless leather biker jacket. But this season, they have provided light among the dark by peppering their usual rock-and-roll monochrome with sheer, sorbet-coloured printed maxi dresses and frosty metallic skater-skirt silhouettes.

Lessons in Fashion







Returning to college after a summer of fun and frolicks was always a dread-inducer, but a college teaching you how to accessorize your Christopher Kane dress and whether midi length skirts are hot or not would have me sprinting to my desk before the bell even rang.

Publishing giant Condé Nast have just announced the launch of their new Condé Nast College of Fashion and Design, which will open its doors this September in time for the 2012 academic year. Up to 300 places will be offered to fee-paying students, and on the fashion school menu will be a year-long foundation course based around legendary fashion bible, Vogue, along with 10-week extensive fashion courses for a more condensed alternative. There will also be modules on the history of fashion and design, the fashion year, print and digital journalism, luxury brand marketing and a House & Garden interior design and decoration course.

Condé Nast is perfectly placed to enter the world of education,” Condé Nast UK managing director Nicholas Coleridge said this morning. “The reputation and authority of our brands puts us in a strong position to teach and inspire the fashion and decorating talent of the future. We look forward to becoming the go-to academy for students from Britain and further afield.”

Running the show as the fashion school’s principal will be Susie Forbes, former editor of Easy Living magazine. The location of the college is yet to be confirmed as they are still securing premises, but it is likely to be around central London. Susie says:

“With access to some of the sharpest and most creative minds shaping the fashion, design and interiors industries today, we aim to educate students to the highest level. It makes perfect sense for Condé Nast to open its College doors in London, the fashion capital of the world.”

The attendence rate of this college will surely be among the best in the country – after all, who would want to skive a lesson which requires you to flick through Vogue all morning? Oh, to be a student again!

Versace Does H&M








H&M have really pulled it out the bag this time. It seems that their fan base stretches far beyond mere high street mortals like myself, and all the way over to the royal fashion realms of Versace.

At the finale of the Italian fashion designer’s men’s show at Milan Fashion Week this summer, Donatella Versace stole the show as she took her bow wearing a beautiful black studded… H&M dress. Huh?! No, this is not an example of Donna trying to cut costs before payday – in fact, she was showcasing a design from H&M‘s new Iconic Collection, the product of a hugely exciting Versace for H&M collaboration.

The capsule collection will hit stores worldwide on November 17 and will not only feature womenswear and menswear but also, for the first time, a home collection. For the women’s range we are promised a glamorous array of leather, studs, silk and flamboyant prints, as well as accessories including high heels and Versace-inspired costume jewellery, all at H&M prices.










H&M must have been busy leaving some pretty sweet gifts on the doorstep of the Versace couture house, because last time I checked, Donatella was far from sold on the idea, claiming that it wouldn’t fit with the Versace ethos. At a New York Times talk in 2008, she said of creating a lower-cost line:

“I respect everyone who does it. But the reason I didn’t do it is because I work very hard to put the Versace line in the luxury section. I think to put the Versace line in H&M would confuse the brand.”

Perhaps she began to feel a little left out watching H&M’s hugely successful collaborations with fashion pals Karl Lagerfield, Matthew Williamson, Stella McCartney and most recently, Lanvin.

I can still recall the mayhem that ensued at the unveiling of the Lanvin Hearts H&M collection on Oxford Street – catfights, cramps and utter chaos! And I’m predicting an even bigger stampede of fashion lovers storming to stores on the 17th for this one.

I, of course, will be among them.
